Department of Science and Technology has issued the revised guidelines for the INSPIRE Fellowship 2026 component under the Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research scheme. These new guidelines are applicable with effect from April 2026 onwards.

🎓 Eligibility Criteria
Educational Qualification
- 1st Rank Holders in any recognized University and Academic Institutions in India in Post-Graduate level examination in Basic/Applied Sciences, including Engineering, Pharmacy, Agricultural Sciences, Medicine, and Veterinary Sciences with minimum 70% marks and batch size of minimum 07 students.
- INSPIRE Scholar having secured a minimum 70% marks in aggregate at M.Sc. or integrated M.S./M.Sc. course.
- 1st Rank Holders in Bachelor's degree in Basic/Applied Sciences including Engineering, Pharmacy, Agricultural Sciences, Medicine, and Veterinary Sciences with minimum 75% marks and batch size of minimum 07 students.
- INSPIRE Scholar having secured a minimum 75% marks in aggregate at B.Sc. (Hons.) (4 years) or B.Sc. with Research of minimum 4 years/8 semesters.
Other Conditions
- Available only for pursuing a full-time Ph.D. program in any recognized university, institution, or R&D laboratory in the country.
- Merely fulfilling the eligibility criteria does not guarantee the final offer of fellowship as selections are made on a competitive basis.

- Statement of Expenditure and Utilization Certificate

- Joining-cum-Acceptance Letter (JCA)
- Annual Progress Report authenticated by the Ph.D. supervisor
- No Objection Certificate (NOC) if changing host institute

1. What is the official website for INSPIRE Fellowship?
The official website is https://www.online-inspire.gov.in.
2. When do the revised INSPIRE Fellowship guidelines become applicable?
The revised guidelines are applicable w.e.f. April 2026 onwards.
3. What is the selection process for INSPIRE Fellowship?
It is a two-tier selection process consisting of screening by an Internal Committee followed by final selection through an Expert Committee.
4. How long is the INSPIRE Fellowship tenable?
The fellowship is tenable for a maximum period of five years from the activation date or completion of the Ph.D. viva-voce, whichever is earlier.
5. Can a fellow avail multiple fellowships concurrently?
No, availing multiple fellowships concurrently from different sources is not allowed.
6. What happens if an application is not recommended?
Applicants whose applications are not recommended must apply for re-submission by filling out the consent form on the web portal within 30 days from the date of the non-recommendation letter.
7. Can the host institute be changed after final selection?
Transfer of host institute is not allowed during the 5-year tenure except in extraordinary circumstances such as dislocation due to marriage for female candidates, demise of the supervisor, or proven cases of sexual harassment, with prior written permission from DST-INSPIRE.
8. What is the maximum duration allowed for short-term research internships?
Fellows are allowed to avail short-term research internships for a maximum duration of 18 months during the 5-year tenure.
